As all the antenatal teachers are fully qualified, licensed and insured, About Birth & Babies is able to offer comprehensive antenatal courses from early pregnancy right through to the early postnatal period. The teachers are competent and experienced to teach about pregnancy, labour and birth as well as caring for and feeding a newborn baby and are one of the few local providers able to offer this total package.
On offer are free early pregnancy classes when 10-25 weeks pregnant, full antenatal courses for those expecting their first baby and refresher courses for those expecting a second or subsequent baby. 1-2-1’s are also available for those whose lifestyles mean they are unable to attend a full course or they don’t like the idea of being part of a group.
The idea to set up About Birth & Babies first came about in 2014. After decades of combined experience facilitating antenatal courses in East Anglia for the NCT, Sian Verney and Ann Roberts took the decision to act on the feedback they had received from hundreds of parents and create a new private antenatal course that was comprehensive, modern, sociable, interactive, supportive, unbiased, competitively priced and fun!
About Birth & Babies was launched in 2015. It has grown year on year and regularly receives 5* reviews and referrals from previous clients and midwives.
Their courses bring together local pregnant women and their birth partners, creating communities of like-minded expectant parents whose babies are due at a similar time. Full antenatal courses include a reunion which ensures the teacher and couples get together again once all the babies have arrived and encourages further meet ups for friendship and support. Most couples continue to meet up for years after attending About Birth & Babies antenatal courses. This can’t be created through any on-line antenatal courses.
Sian and Ann have children of their own, long-established relationships with midwives and other specialists in the area and an excellent understanding of the local maternity service which ensures knowledge is up to date and in line with local practice.
Working passionately and thoughtfully, they ensure couples feel relaxed, gain the confidence they need to trust their instincts and are prepared for their life-changing journey ahead.
Sian has been facilitating antenatal classes for over fourteen years. She also volunteers as a breastfeeding peer supporter and sits on the Maternity Voices Partnership at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. Maternity Voices looks at aspects of the local maternity service and makes recommendations for improvements.
Sian is married with two children who were both born at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
In her spare time she enjoys being with her family, going to the gym and nights out with friends where she is partial to a cocktail or two.
Parents often leave my courses saying how much they have enjoyed the sessions which allowed them to feel more confident and reassured. I provide unbiased evidence-based information which enables parents to take decisions throughout their individual experiences.
They also say how invaluable they find the support network both before and after the birth of their babies. Our course reunions cement these relationships.
Ann is married to Neil, they have four grown-up children and enjoy the delights of four grandchildren now too.
Ann has been facilitating antenatal classes and supporting parents for nearly thirty years. With an additional qualification, BA in Educational Studies, she is also an assessor and tutor of antenatal teachers.
In her spare time she enjoys reading, walking her dogs, spending time with her extended family and writing for birth journals.
I am delighted to be able to offer independent antenatal courses as I feel many areas of Norfolk and Suffolk need more individual, flexible courses at affordable prices.
It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with parents at such a special time.
All the teachers hold a university accredited qualification in Antenatal Education and attend a minimum of two continuous professional development days per year.
They are also members of the regulatory body, The Federation of Antenatal Teachers, who ensure their members meet high professional standards by requiring proof of recognised qualifications for membership including a Licence to Practice.
