Tinnitus

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition where noises are heard when there is no external source, usually in the ears or in the head. This affects around 10% of the UK population and research has shown that a high proportion of tinnitus sufferers also experience hearing loss.

The way people perceive tinnitus varies enormously – from just one sound to a mixture of whistling, ringing, buzzing and rushing sounds. The condition is common among deaf and hard of hearing people but it also happens to a small number of hearing people.

Tinnitus is a symptom, not a disease and there can be many different causes. It can be linked to exposure to loud noise, hearing loss, ear or head injuries, some diseases of the ear and some ear infections, or it can be a side effect of some medication. It may be a combination of all or some of these or a person may never have any of these conditions.

The Hearing Care Centre have staff fully trained to consult you about ways in which you can manage your tinnitus. During your appointment with us we will spend time investigating your tinnitus and can determine if a treatable medical condition exists or if further evaluation from an ENT is necessary.

This 1 to 1 support is extremely beneficial as you can receive personalised recommendations for your specific experience of tinnitus and an explanation of ways in which to manage the condition.

• Had any ear surgery (apart from cases of extruded grommets which had come out at least 18 months beforehand) had a middle ear infection (otitis media) in the past six weeks.

In these cases, we recommend microsuction instead, which uses gentle suction to remove excessive or troublesome earwax. It is performed with the aid of an operating microscope and a finely calibrated suction device, without the introduction of any materials or liquids.

Full tinnitus consultations are charged at £60.
